Baylor a Christian school? Mothers and fathers don’t sent your daughters to Baylor. if she gets raped by a football goon the school and the Waco (wacko?) police department will look the other way – also their daily fish wrapper. But this is Texas so what would you expect?

College student athletes are not really students. They are minor league athletes recruited by the school to represent the school on the court or on the field.
They are tutored by coaches whose salaries often exceed $1 million / year. They are not obliged to take the same courses or maintain the same academic standards as students.
In their defense, these athletes are pursuing professional careers, not degrees. In a more rational world, they would be playing in minor leagues supported by the NBA or NFL, they would be paid a decent living wage, and would perhaps have insurance policies that protected them against career ending injuries.
Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus devote an entire chapter of their excellent book, HIGHER EDUCATION, to the problem. The chapter is aptly titled “The Athletic Incubus”.
