On 7-29-2022 at approximately 5:11am, Ukiah PD personnel received an emergency call regarding a structure fire at the Redwood Manor Apartments Unit #28. The residence was enflamed and three residents were located outside of the building with injuries from the fire.
The residents outside, a 40-year-old father and two of his children: a 13-year-old male and a 7-year-old female, were transported to the hospital for potentially life-threatening injuries. The mother was a 41-year-old resident who was about seven months pregnant. Tragically, she was unable to escape the fire and was found deceased by personnel on scene.
The Ukiah Valley Fire Authority (UVFA) contained and extinguished the fire. Some neighboring apartments were damaged; however, the neighboring residents were evacuated safely. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by UVFA but it is not considered to be suspicious in nature. The death of the 41-year-old resident is also not considered suspicious, but it is actively being investigated by the UPD Detective Bureau.
Due to the active and fluid nature of the investigation, names and details are being withheld. Anyone with information about suspicious activity is urged to contact the Ukiah Police Department. UPD and UVFA extends their appreciation to the outside agencies, residents, and bystanders who were cooperative and assisted on scene.
As always, UPD’s mission is to make Ukiah as safe a place as possible. If you would like to know more about crime in your neighborhood, you can sign up for telephone, cellphone, and email notifications by clicking the Nixle button on our website; www.ukiahpolice.com.
