Bird’s Eye View (Apr 22, 2015)

A couple of insightful observations made at the Historical Society’s Roundtable discussion based on life here in the Valley during the 1970s each resonated with a number of 3-Dot regulars. One was that back then many outsiders coming in to make a new life here found that they needed to work together with the residents for everyone to make a living; in the last couple of decades this has not necessarily been the case and we have witnessed many instances where the influx of people have set up businesses of their own and perhaps relationships with many local folks has not been the same.

In the northwest end of the Valley (Christine Woods/Floodgate area), and elsewhere too I am told, residents endured two nights of sleeplessness this past week as a result of the Noise Pollution provided by certain unconcerned neighbors in the wine industry (who were obviously absent and sleeping deeply in their ivory towers, wherever they may be). Both nights reached Two-Helicopters on the Frost Protection Fan Index. That’s pretty damn loud.

Rumors have it that as many as three, four, or perhaps even all five seats on the School Board may be up for election later this year. I cannot confirm this, and some of the numbers certainly sound a little far-fetched, but it’s what I’ve heard from a couple of sources so I guess we’ll see.

Not much to report this week other than one particularly momentous occasion, tomorrow, March 26, the Valley’s oldest citizen, Freda Fox, turns 97 years young. If ever the vastly overused word “awesome” can be applied then this would certainly be the occasion. Yes, Freda, that really is awesome!

Several regulars at the 3-Dot and myself wish to pass on our congratulations to owner Tom Towey on the Fourth Anniversary of his Buckhorn restaurant and pub in the heart of Boonville. Recalling those months in late 2010 and early 2011, I remember well Tom’s perseverance as he fought through the ridiculous red tape and mind-boggling bureaucracy that Mendocino County provides as obstacles for anyone who is planning to open a pub/restaurant.

First, may I wish a very happy St. Patrick’s Day for next Tuesday to everyone: the Irish, the Irish-Americans, the Irish Mexican-Americans, the Irish Native American Indian Americans, etc, etc, etc.
