Developers are proposing to remove the hill behind the former College of the Redwoods, and replace it with stores and a parking lot. Instead of ocean views and open space, visitors at the junction of Hwy 1 and Hwy 20 will see the backside alley of a strip mall.
The proposed paved road behind the complex would cut off wildlife access from the Hare Creek watershed to Todd Point, destroy an important geographic feature, cut off remaining ocean views, and open the door to further development near the college.
All this the planning department has proposed to do without the required Environmental Impact Report.

The area in question is now a bunch of armature signs arranged in a disorganized fashion. I have long thought that this first visual impression of Fort Bragg is very ugly and trashy. Maybe a shopping center would be an improvement. God knows we need someplace to shop and prices that are affordable.
