Following weeks of steady rain in December, we're currently enjoying mild winter days here on the Mendocino Coast. While daffodils are just starting to send up shoots, Camellia season is in full bloom. Magnolias are making buds and beginning to open. Did you know these plants are among the most ancient on our planet? They were one of the first flowering plants and evolved even before bees! Because of this, they are pollinated by beetles.
MORE BLOOMS: Banksias and other plants in the southern hemisphere's Protea family; tender species rhododendrons; a few other rhododendrons, including dark pink Rhododendron 'Cynthia', which heralds the onset of spring bloom; heaths; and mushrooms (late season).
GREY WHALE MIGRATION: The headlands at the Gardens are a prime whale watching spot. With many memorial benches that face the ocean, bring your binoculars and a picnic and watch for spouts! The grey whales continue south to their Baja birthing grounds through this month, then turn north again February through April.

So you want to raise chickens? This workshop will help you to take the first steps to having your own backyard farm. From planning your chicken coop, choosing your chicks/chickens, to feeding and watering. This workshop will provide you with the basic knowledge on how to get started and what to expect.
The same workshop will be given on both dates.
Ben Nicholson has lived on the Mendocino Coast for the past 16 years. His love of raising chickens can be traced back to growing up on the family farm/ranch in the Santa Clara Valley. Wherever he has lived, chickens have found a way into his life. With a background in education and gardening it is a natural step for Ben to want to share his knowledge with others interested in raising chickens. Ben recently retired and is planning his dream chicken coop.
