This blog derives its name from the Editor's back page of the long defunct "Environment Magazine," then edited by Sheldon Novick out of Washington University in St. Louis where I served as a contributor and local speaker while stationed in St. Louis in the Air Force in the early 70s. Novick's skeptical editorials questioned both environmentalists and polluters and influenced a whole generation of idealists and serious, science-based environmentalists who derived their initial inspiration from Barry Commoner and his Center for the Biology of Natural Systems and his groundbreaking book "The Closing Circle."
We're certainly not part of any university or a scientific off-shoot, but we do hope to bring the same kind of serious skepticism combined with humor that characterized Novick's columns. Although in this case it will focus primarily on Mendocino County management, finances, politics and public officials.
As time goes by we hope to expand the blog into less traditional text-based comments and more into some annotated videos, audio and graphics, assuming The Jaundiced Eye can figure out how to do it. Mendo offers an endless supply of absurdities and jokes from persons in official positions who should know better so there should be plenty of material to work with, particularly as budgets continue to tighten and various not-ready-for-prime-time officials (and candidates) get more and more stressed. We'll also post an occasional favorite from history/the archive with updates if necessary.
Tips and comments are encouraged, as are copies of emails and other documents from the bowels of local offices and bureaucracies. Anonymity will be strictly protected when requested.
Onward!
