Letters (Jan 21, 2015)

About 18 months ago, I was present in Ten Mile Courtroom when Judge Brennan presided in a sentencing hearing. The defendant was an older man who suffered from a mental disturbance and was on government disability. He had clearly experienced a hard life. He was a first-time offender for the crime at hand, and he had, as I recall, plead guilty to possessing internet pornography of underage females. This material had been found during a search of his home by a probation officer.

The folks who coach sports at our local schools do a fine job with little financial reward — not that they want any more, I’m sure. The stipend they receive may possibly cover the gas they use driving to and from the school each day, and some choose to donate what they receive back to the school sports booster program. Others feel they cannot afford to do this and accepting some compensation for gas is fair given the many hours they donate. Either way, the numerous benefits to the school experience enjoyed by many student athletes are a testament to the coaches’ hard work and dedication.

Unlucky In Love

“It had been five years,” Mr. Long told the detectives, “five long years and more, I’d gone without it, without, totally without, I mean, ur, uh, ah — you know — sex, sex of any kind; and then [on August 7th] I got lucky. It was my wildest dreams come true! Two smokin' hot babes with a room at Motel 6. Which, I meant, I’d met the little hotties at the liquor store, and they said, ‘Like, dude, get some awesome vodka, dude, and like come up to the room’ and I thought it was gonna be a threesome! How awesome is that?”

MIKE KALANTARIAN sends along this ominous photo of the Navarro, already closed at the mouth. Last year, it rained hard in December and was mostly dry the rest of the formerly wet season. We may be getting a repeat.
