I am reliably informed that for the first time in a few years the AV Historical Society and Museum has secured a booth at the County Fair this year. My close personal friend, Steve Sparks, will be operating the stall, accompanied at times by fellow author Wes Smoot. Feel free to stop by and chat with folks familiar with Valley history and perhaps support the Society by buying a book, or even by becoming a member of this important organization!

The Lions fundraising bbq for the AV Ambulance, held at the Fairgrounds last Sunday afternoon, was a big success. There were in excess of 120 people, one of the busier such events of the summer, greatly helped by the earlier large turnout for the Linda Brennan Memorial from which many folks made their way to the Fairgrounds down the road.

Here in AV we arguably have more than our fair share of kind and thoughtful people. One of these is someone whom I regard as almost heroic when it comes to caring for animals in need.

While the diabolical terrorist attacks on innocent people which have taken place over the past year or two are still far from commonplace, their frequency has become such that I believe the reactions by many of us to such horrors are beginning, very gradually, to get increasingly numbed.

Is it all starting to unravel for The Donald? Following a number of recent gaffes, Republican Meg Whitman, President and CEO of Hewlett-Packard, and a major financial contributor to the GOP, commented on Facebook that to vote Republican out of party loyalty alone “would be to endorse a candidacy that I believe has exploited anger, grievance, xenophobia and racial division.” I am sure many Trump supporters responded with, “So what’s your point?” Yes, that response might be funny were it not quite possibly true.

According to polls, a total of some 20% of the electorate, comprising voters from all sides of the political spectrum, express the view that they do not like either presidential candidate. As a result, folks are theorizing that the election in November will actually come down to a choice between the lesser of two “evils.” Has it ever been this bad?

Donald Trump received the nomination of the Republican Party last week. That development was virtually unthinkable a year ago when he was generally viewed as a loud-mouthed, crude and tactless television celebrity with a massive ego who had been born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Bird’s Eye View (July 20, 2016)

The rise of Donald Trump in this country is another example of the kind of right-wing populist politics that is gaining ground in many western democracies. Think France, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and, less surprisingly, Hungary and Poland.

With so much strife and dissension in today’s world, let’s begin with news of an event which takes us back to a simpler and more caring and harmonious society in so many ways. The AV Historical Society and Museum will present their annual event on Sunday, July 17 at the Little Red Schoolhouse just north of Boonville on Highway 128/AV Way.
