In looking over the Old Coast Hotel issue I feel there is a lot of misunderstanding concerning the Concerned Citizens of Fort Bragg. It is a loosely and recently formed group.
I’m writing to you as a rural fire chief concerned about a local forestry practice slipping between the cracks of public oversight. I ask for the issue to be discussed and vetted. I want to work with you and industry to find a reasonable solution.
While I am glad to see the state taking some action toward conserving water and planning for the future, I am appalled it took this long. I am also amazed the state hasn’t gone after the biggest users of water in California: the manufacturing and agricultural industries. With a significant amount of California’s water being used in those industries, even if we, as citizens, do our best to conserve water, California’s “appropriative” water rights encourage poor water-use practices. If the state wants to get serious about the drought, it needs to drastically change our current water rights.
It's important to note that the Mendocino County Deputy Sheriff's Association, a group one would assume would be supportive of a new courthouse, in fact opposes the project.
The Redwood Valley Water District, has no water rights at this time to pump any water out of Lake Mendocino which belongs to the Russian River Flood Control and Water Improvement District (RRFCD), due to the fact that RRFCD has not declared that there is any surplus water available to the RVCWD at this time. The RVCWD water rights permit does not allow the pumping water from Lake Mendocino at this time due to drought conditions, water flows below the Lake, and also the level of the conservation pool at in Lake Mendocino.
