The first rains hit the Valley last week and one of the ‘victims’ of the downpour was the high school soccer match in Boonville against the rival Mendocino Cardinals scheduled for last Wednesday. It was re-arranged for last night (10/20) and was played after we went to press. Meanwhile the Panthers took their 100% winning record down to Geyserville last Friday afternoon for the teams’ second meeting of the season, the first going AV’s way 11-1.
The Co-Captain Ferreyra cousins, Omar and Domingo, were both ill on the journey down and were unable to play, as was another sick starter Junior Mendoza who didn’t even travel. He didn’t miss much. It was a very poor game although the result was never really in doubt despite Geyserville at one point coming back fro 0-2 down to tie it 2-2. Goals from Hector Cruz (2), Sergio Gutierrez (2), Elio Gonzales, Jose Garcia, and Chavo Eligio gave AV a 7-2 victory.
There are four remaining regular season games including the only one that could realistically put a damper on the Panthers' remarkable year — next Monday (10/26) here at Tom Smith Field in Boonville against a very good Roseland Prep team. If ever the players will appreciate your support this will be it. So I encourage you to come along and cheer the guys on to victory. Kick-off is at 4:30pm. Before then, today (10/21) it’s Point Arena at home also at 4:30pm.
Record (Won/Lost/Drawn): League 3-0-0; Overall 15-0-0
