Aquaponics Using Applied Permaculture--Workshop June 28-29 at Solar Living Institute
A self-sufficient system: Weekend workshop provides introductionto exciting new field The Solar Living Institute continues its series of cutting-edge sustainable technology courses on the weekend of June 28-29, with a special course called "Intro to Aquaponics Using Applied Permaculture." Classes run from 9 am to 5 pm on both days and will be taught by Nor Cal Aquaponics owner Maximillian Meyers. Aquaponics is one of the most sustainable and productive farming systems in the world. It combines aquaculture and hydroponics to create a truly self-sufficient closed loop system that uses only a fraction of the water, labor, and energy that other methods use. Virtually all of the system's needs (water, energy, fish, feed, heat, gas) can be produced onsite. Any wastes produced are transformed into resources and opportunities used to support, maintain and improve the systems. Products of the systems include: harvested rainwater, solar electricity, solar-heated air and water, fish, vegetables, fruit, compost, worms, and more. In this introduction, students will learn about some of the most cutting-edge and pioneering aquaponics systems in the world and gain a solid foundation from which to begin their own aquaponics system, farm or other thriving Green business. We will touch on many field formulas, guidelines, detailed construction plans, permaculture design integration, and more. Maximillian Meyers is an experienced ecological designer, consultant, rainwater and greywater system specialist, and farmer. He is the Executive Director of Nor Cal Aquaponics — www.norcalaquaponics.com. In 2003 he founded Mendocino Ecological Learning Center (MELC), a nonprofit educational organization and ecological reserve offering green job training and sustainable living skills. He also provides ecological design services to the public, organizations, and schools through Osiris Designs, Nor Cal Aquaponics and Living Mandala. Mr. Meyers has taught courses in permaculture and ecological design in seven countries around the world.
