Years before the dawn of tweeting and texting, I ran a summer writing program for high school kids who wanted to become professional writers. The teachers I hired were accomplished, open-minded, inspiring writers who could clearly communicate their ideas about the craft of writing.

The Good News (And Bad)

Jesus Christ has made a rare appearance in the Mendocino County Courthouse. He’d been living a fairly unremarkable life in Ukiah, especially considering who He is, disguised as John Francis Sullivan Jr., until He realized He was the son of God Himself. Well, you say, we're all God's children, aren't we? Yes, but there's only one Jesus, the child God dispatched in a vain attempt to straighten us out.

Raising More Than Kids

When Jay and I met in 1997, we were attending a large urban college in Denver. We were completing Bachelor of Science degrees in Environment Science, a very new program at the time. It was essentially a build your own degree based on a variety of classes in biology, geography, geology, botany, soil science, and hydrology. We had a combined total of 12 years in the program and no real idea of what job we could do with this background—except it did leave us with an idea that we wanted to live a more self-sustainable, lesser impact lifestyle.
