The Sounds Of Sierra Fest

Saturday's closer Shaggy, a superstar dancehall reggae singer/toaster of the 1990s, was a controversial headliner from the start - months before the show, online comments like "Shaggy? LOL" appeared, with true, (older?) reggae fans wondering what he was doing as a headliner, if at the festival at all. His actual appearance did nothing to resolve the conflict. People jammed both the front of the stage, cheering, and the exits, jeering. Shaggy's oft-crude demeanor and language was not all that rude by dancehall standards but struck many as out-of-place and insulting.

Valley People (July 2, 2014)

TWO LOCAL CALLERS this week were alarmed at the swathes of dead trees they could see on Mendocino Redwood Company land to the northwest. MRC uses an herbicide to kill non-commercial trees. Another local said the men who do the hacking and squirting, are ferried to the work site in a white vans with a white pump/hose truck bearing the logo “Great Tree Tenders — Rehabilitation and Restoration.” And, in smaller print, “Farm Labor Contractor.”

On Sunday morning, as I drowned my sorrows following Mexico’s exit from the World Cup after a heart-breaking loss in the last minute to the Dutch, I tried to remember that when things seem at their lowest ebb there is a need for optimism as there is nearly always a silver-lining to be gleaned from somewhere.
