When I was growing up, PG&E constantly advertised how, in the not-so-distant future, all electricity would be underground. I never thought about the danger; I just assumed they would do it to hide the ugly wires. However, as a firefighter for 25 years, I have seen how insane it is to have high-voltage wires strung from pole to pole along our county roads. I have responded to an untold number of vegetation fires caused by cars crashing into poles or winds causing branches and trees to fall on wires.

I’m an old man with Medicare Part D drug insurance. I shop at a local chain food market pharmacy. One of my prescriptions results in an $80.03 co-pay. They sell that drug for $225.69 cash. I found another chain store that sells it for $21.69 cash. I later found a website that allows me to print coupons so that the pharmacy I’ve been shopping at will sell it for $15.72 cash. Unbelievable is the only printable word that comes to mind.
There have several instances of big raises for the already generously paid management employees of the City of Ukiah and Mendocino County. These studies and been skewed by comparison with the salaries of Santa Rosa and Sonoma County—much bigger governments with bigger responsibilities.
The Palace Hotel is, and has been a huge long-term downer. The Palace Hotel is a drain. Indeed, a societal leech. It sits in the center of town as the largest billboard saying that someone here (or someones) care nothing about Ukiah.
As I near the end of my term on the MCDH Board of Directors, I would like to outline the principal problems I see at the Mendocino Coast District Hospital, and possible solutions.
Here we go again. Another shut down by MRC. As if it wasn't bad enough for them to not take logs for a week right in the middle of September. But now they are not accepting logs the rest of the logging season which is approximately 4-5 weeks.
I was saddened to read the article about the Albion River Bridge lawsuit. How are we to repair our decaying infrastructure when residents oppose such efforts at every turn?
Recently, the Ukiah Daily Journal reported that the four-year old Ukiah Valley Sanitation District lawsuit vs. the City of Ukiah finally settled for $7.5 million.
This sum is misleading. Why? Because the District previously received $9 million as a result of the lawsuit which means $16,000,000; and also because of changes arising out of a new operating agreement. The recovery for District over term of bond more than doubles that figure to $32 million.
I was shocked and extremely disappointed to read that the California Coastal Commission is apparently going to pay the fines and legal costs for Steve Kinsey and the other convicted Coastal Commission members.
