Mendocino County Today: Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016

* * *

RAINY DAYS appear headed our way, beginning Wednesday. A couple inches are expected with this storm, with the possibility of more to follow next week.

THUS FAR, we've enjoyed a prolific early wet season, providing bonanza mushrooming and verdant green landscapes. October 2016 turned out to be a record breaker, with 10.36 inches of rain recorded in Yorkville (average for that month being 2.16 inches). This was followed by 6.76 inches in November (average being 4.27 inches). So Yorkville accumulated 17.12 inches during the first two months of the season, which was 10.69 inches over average.

SFA BOARD RESIGNS

An Open Letter From The Board of the Small Farmers Association (SFA).

Dear SFA Members,

An employee of the association has been abusing the responsibility and power vested in her, through the board, by the members of the SFA.

With disregard for her contract and the bylaws upon which the SFA was founded, this employee has withheld the rolls and contact information of the SFA members from the board. Additionally, she has falsely represented herself as speaking for the SFA as a whole. Furthermore, she has taken money from SFA coffers without board approval for her own wages and ends. This has caused disruption in SFA activities, such as delaying payments to the state tax board for incorporation fees.

She has hand picked the people she would like to see sit on the board; established this selection without consultation with the sitting board members; and has set a yearly meeting date, again without consultation with the board.

As per the Association’s Bylaws, new board members must be nominated and voted on at the open yearly meeting. Finally, she has established her own steering committee without board approval.

The members of the board who have represented, financed, and managed the activities of the SFA have no interest in continuing to fight for control of this organization. Therefore, we of the board have decided to resign our positions rather than engage in a legal battle for control of the SFA. We urge the membership of the SFA to look for information and representation from other local groups.

Thank you for your support over the years,

Sincerely,

The SFA Board

FROM THIS LETTER, it seems clear that the mass resignation of the Board of the Small Farmers Association (SFA) is aimed at Julia Carrera, who lists herself on the SFA website as "SFA representative" (and third party inspector) and signs most of the postings. "The SFA started with Julia Carrera who was one of only three certified inspectors for the Mendocino County 9.31 Zip-tie program. For over two years Julia and 87 of her farmer clients met with each other, agriculture commissioners, organic certifiers, bio-dynamic certifiers, permaculture experts, and dispensary owners to create a Best Management Practices (BMPs)."

SHENOA, the large resort property off Ray’s Road, Philo, has sold. Sale price was $6.5 million, not that Jeff Skoll, the owner got that amount. And it seems that the Rookie-To premises in central Boonville has also sold, to whom is not yet known.

UP THE HILL from Shenoa at Blackbird, opposition grows to Blackbird’s preposterous application to install accommodations for 292 visitors, access via heretofore lightly traveled Ray’s Road. Blackbird proprietor, John Hall, made his fortune off the privatization of public education called charter schools. With the Trump administration all for privatization of the education system, and a privatizer as his Secretary of Education, Hall, conceivably, could wind up owning Anderson Valley Unified.

CHECK TO BE CERTAIN of time and place, but the Blackbird fandango will be heard by the Planning Commission on Thursday morning, 9am, December 15th.

ACE RESEARCHER DEBORAH SILVA discovered the inevitable local angle to the terrible Oakland fires. Deborah reports: "Derick Ion, who managed the building where the fire occurred Friday night. Derick's true name is Derick Ion Almena. He's from the LA area but both he and his wife Micah Allison, lived in the Willits area on Shimmins Road about 10 years ago, according to the background checks I ran. It appears that Derick has a relative living in Ukiah, Edward Almena. Not sure how Edward is related. While he is old enough to have been a young father to Derick, it looks like Derick has an older brother and sister. They all have the same mother's maiden name and Edward would not be old enough to have fathered the brother and sister. The brother, Alexander, passed away in 2013. Edward might be a cousin or uncle. Almena is not a very common last name.

THE ONLY MARRIAGE RECORD I could find for Derick was before he was with Micah Allison. I did not find a marriage record for Derick and Micah but it doesn't mean they weren't married.

IT IS REPORTED that Derick is in hiding and no one is saying whether or not police have spoken to him. Just from what I've heard so far the guy deserves to be in prison for a very long time. The building owner should also be held to some degree of responsibility.

AS MOST VALLEY RESIDENTS are by now aware, Dr. McGhan has resigned his position at the Anderson Valley Health Center. The following two letters are (1) the Health Center’s board of directors obfuscating adieu to the doctor and his family, (2) McGhan’s equivalently obfuscating letter of resignation:

“AFTER much consideration, Dr. Logan McGhan has decided to resign from his position as Staff Physician at the Anderson Valley Health Center, effective immediately. Dr. McGhan has been at the AVHC for the past 28 months and we appreciate his service to his patients and our community in helping the clinic provide the best health care we can. We all wish the very best for Dr. McGhan, Rocio, Carmelo and Aria in their future endeavors. We will immediately begin searching for additional medical staff to help Dr. Apfel and Cindy Arbanovella in providing services to all of our patients. We will also begin a search for a permanent medical staff member for the AVHC. There are many resources available to the AVHC through relationships with other medical professionals and programs and all of these will be contacted to help. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work towards bringing on a new provider. Anderson Valley Health Center Board of Directors”

DR. MCGHAN WRITES: “Anderson Valley and the AVHC, It is with great sadness that I announce my immediate resignation from the Anderson Valley Health Center. After much difficult consideration, Rocio and I have decided to move our children closer to family in Oregon. The past two years have been an incredible experience for me, Rocio, Carmelo, and Aria. We have made life-long connections with many people, and will be forever grateful for the wonderful time and many lessons we have had. Furthermore, I will be forever grateful to the wonderful AVHC staff, who no doubt will continue to provide the kind, compassionate, supportive care that the AVHC is known for. I would also like to thank Chloe, Mark, Ric, and the AVHC Board for their graciousness and understanding during my tenure in the Valley. I have been treated very well during the past 2 years, and would very much like to continue but the circumstances of life have called us closer to ailing family members. The clinic is in excellent hands, and we ask for the community’s trust, respect, and understanding during this time of transition. Though we are leaving, our hearts will hold onto this beautiful Valley and its people forever. We will miss everyone.

Sincerely, Logan and Rocio McGhan

IT IS KNOWN that Dr. McGhan had been unhappy with Health Center management. The dispute between management and him over a loan repayment seemed to be resolved, but when the doctor, who'd already walked out, discovered that his return depended on his pay being docked for the week he was gone, he decided to resign. It was clear that McGhan’s many accumulated grievances with management led to his departure, not the single issue about a three thousand dollar loan agreement.

PERSONS close to the situation describe the AV Health Center as "dysfunctional," lacking in procedures to hear employee complaints about management and "no peer review of staff." Our source says that “the board of trustees is kept pretty much in the dark." Additionally, the insider says. "There's a boycott of the clinic by several Mexican families who claim that the clinic is releasing medical information to unauthorized persons. This was brought to admin's attention and they have tried to keep it a secret from the board and rest of staff."

THE YOUNG, BILINGUAL DOCTOR'S departure leaves the busy AV Health Center with the retirement-aged Mark Apfel as its sole doctor. Apfel’s caseload is now double what it was before McGhan left.

HISTORICALLY CONSIDERED, the Center's board of trustees is not what anyone would describe as "forthcoming." There have been several entirely avoidable personnel controversies over the past several years that the trustees have exacerbated by in-house bumbling. McGhan’s resignation seems entirely preventable, but there it is. (The letter from the board announcing McGhan’s departure reads like a joint project of Stalin’s politburo and the Borgia family. Murder? Are you referring to the dead man in the corner with the knife in his back? Self-inflicted. Obviously.)

A READER WRITES: "Such a typical Boonville fiasco. They should be doing everything possible to keep him. What’s wrong with the damn Board? If I were on that Board I would be doing an exhaustive interviewing process with everyone to get down to the reality of exactly how dysfunctional the place is, firing incompetent and crooked staff people, stomping around and making waves and finding more money to keep him here. That Board is breathtakingly incompetent to have this happen so soon after the other fiasco. I am more than sorry to see that wonderful young doctor go. He was absolutely the best, brightest, most engaging and caring doctor I’ve met in the last 30 years.”

* * *

A READER WRITES: “Regarding ‘Who Poisoned My Grapes’ by Bob Dempel, after notifying the Sonoma County at Commissioner's office that a portion of his vineyard was damaged with a wind drift of glyphosate (Roundup) and clopyralid, Mr. Dempel is finding out the system is against playing by the rules. The Ag Commissioner's office sent him a warning that he could be subjected to criminal prosecution or face civil penalties for selling produce that carries excessive pesticides and herbicides. My question is how is it that conventional farmers apply Roundup to their fields, such as oats and wheat, before harvest, as a drying agent, and they are not subjected to the same guidelines? I wonder if these farmers even care, it's all about profit. Enjoy your Cheerios and Ritz Crackers. Profit over health. Even closer to home, we all have heard of the "mite" infestation of many marijuana gardens. I mention this since we live near a grower that was seen wearing a hazmat suit with a respirator to treat his mite infested medicine. Does a systemic treatment make for good healthy smoke or just secure profit at the expense of a smoker’s health? Is it still medicine?”

SWEENEY'S GONE BUT HIS MEMORY LIVES ON
(at the Albion Transfer Station)

From: skip taube
To: Mike Sweeney
Subject: Albion waste transfer station ramp way too steep

Mr. Sweeney –

I made my run to the Albion transfer station with waste and recyclables last Saturday and came back hurting. The recently installed metal ramp to the recycle dumpsters is radically steep and very slippery when wet (which it was, as a previous patron had spilled water). Even hanging on to the handrail going down w/o a load I slipped and caught myself before crashing down. Afterwards I notice my lower back is “out,” I am stooped and in pain. I suggest you replace the ramp with stairs or a hydraulic lift, or redesign more like the covered garbage bins that are below grade and easy to dump into w/o climbing up a way too steep wet ramp with an armful of bottles. And, will the County reimburse me for chiropractor expenses? I trust this crappy ramp design is not a nasty way to get more (old) folks to subscribe to the trash collector’s service! The designers and County building permitters should go back to college as they border on being criminally incompetent. You, as County Waste Czar, appear to be asleep at the wheel and it looks like the bus has no driver. Fix it, please; soon.

Dear Skip,

Thank you for your email. I am very sorry to hear of your fall and hope you are feeling better soon. Mike Sweeney has retired and I am the new General Manager at MSWMA. Solid Wastes of Willits operates the Albion Transfer Station, and the ramp would be something they install and maintain. I have cc'd them (Rocky Seaton and Jerry Ward) on this email. Let's see what they have to say about your suggestions. Curbside collection services in your area are actually offered by a different company, Empire Waste Management.

All the best,

THE DEEPENING DEEP STATE

by James Kunstler

One amusing angle on the news media broadside about Russia “hacking” the US election is the failure to mention — or even imagine! — that the US incessantly and continually runs propaganda psy-ops against every other country in the world. And I’m not even including the venerable, old, out-in-the-open propaganda organs like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe (reminder: the Iron Curtain came down a quarter century ago). Do you suppose that nobody at Langley, or the Pentagon, or the NSA’s sprawling 1.5 million square foot Utah Data Center is laboring night and day to sow confusion among other societies to push our various agendas?

The main offensive started with The Washington Post’s publication on Nov 26 of “The List,” a story calling out dozens of blogs and web news-sites as purveyors of “fake news” fronting for Russian disinformation forces. The list included Zero Hedge, Naked Capitalism, and David Stockman’s blog. There were several whack-job sites mixed in the list for seasoning — The Daily Stormer (Nazis), Endtime.com (Evangelical apocalyptic), GalacticConnection (UFO shit). The rest range between tabloid-silly and genuine, valuable news commentary. What else would you expect in a society with an Internet AND a completely incoherent consensus about reality?

Pretty obviously, the struggle between mainstream news and Web news climaxed over the election, with the mainstream overwhelmingly pimping for Hillary, and then having a nervous breakdown when she lost. Desperate to explain the loss, the two leading old-line newspapers, The New York Times and The Washington Post, ran with the Russia-Hacks-Election story — because only Satanic intervention could explain the fall of Ms. It’s-My-Turn / I’m-With-Her. Thus, the story went, Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee (DNC), gave the hacked emails to Wikileaks, and sabotaged not only Hillary herself but the livelihoods of every myrmidon in the American Deep State termite mound, an unforgivable act.

Also interestingly, these newspapers and their handmaidens on TV, were far less concerned as to whether the leaked information was true or not — e.g. the Clinton Foundation donors’ influence-peddling around arms deals made in the State Department; the DNC’s campaign to undermine Bernie Sanders in the primaries; DNC temporary chair (and CNN employee) Donna Brazille conveying debate questions to HRC; the content of HRC’s quarter-million-dollar speeches to Wall Street banks. All of that turned out to be true, of course.

Then, a few weeks after the election, the US House of Representatives passed H.R. 6393, the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017. Blogger Ronald Thomas West reports:

Section 501 calls for the government to “counter active measures by Russia to exert covert influence … carried out in coordination with, or at the behest of, political leaders or the security services of the Russian Federation and the role of the Russian Federation has been hidden or not acknowledged publicly.”

The measure has not been passed by the Senate or signed into law yet, and the holiday recess may prevent that. But it is easy to see how it would empower the Deep State to shut down whichever websites they happened to not like. My reference to the Deep State might even imply to some readers that I’m infected by the paranoia virus. But I’m simply talking about the massive “security” and surveillance matrix that has unquestionably expanded since the 9/11 airplane attacks, creating a gigantic NSA superstructure above and beyond the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense’s DIA, and the hoary old FBI.

A little paranoia about the growing fascist behavior of the US government is a useful corrective to trends that citizens ought to be concerned about — for instance, the militarization of police; the outrageous “civil forfeiture” scam that allows police to steal citizens cash and property without any due process of law; the preferential application of law as seen in the handling of the Clinton Foundation activities and the misconduct of banking executives; the attempt to impose a “cashless society” that would herd all citizens into a financial surveillance hub and eliminate their economic liberty.

These matters are especially crucial as the nation stumbles into the next financial crisis and the Deep State becomes desperate to harvest every nickel it can to rescue itself plus the cast of “systemically important” (Too-Big-To-Fail) banks and related institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which are about to once again be left holding colossal bags of worthless non-performing mortgages, not to mention the pension funds and insurance companies that will also founder in the Great Unwind that is likely to commence as Trump hangs his golden logo over the White House portico.

THE PERSON WHO DECIPHERED THE ORDER TO SHOOT AT KENT STATE

by Howard Lisnoff

Stuart Allen died on November 22, 2016. I learned of his death by way of an email from Laurel Krause, whose sister Allison was gunned down by the National Guard on May 4, 1970, just after the noon hour during a demonstration against the U.S. incursion into Cambodia during the Vietnam War.

Stuart Allen would not like to be called a hero, although he certainly was one. Stuart was both an audio and video expert, with degrees in both fields and worked out of his lab and business in New Jersey that offers expert analyses of that kind of data. Stuart often worked for law enforcement, including the Justice Department and the FBI.

In 2010, both Stuart and another forensic audio expert, Tom Owen, provided information at the request of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (“New analysis of 40-year old recording of Kent State shootings reveals that Ohio Guard was given an order to prepare to fire,” May 9, 2010) about a new analysis of the famous Strubbe tape, a recording of the events that led up to the death of four students and the wounding of nine others during a demonstration against the U.S. incursion into Cambodia.

The tape that Stuart analyzed, and the results with which Tom Owen concurred, yielded dramatic new information. Using state-of-the-art forensic audio tools, one of which was developed by the Soviet KGB prior to the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Stuart found that a sequence of orders was given to the National Guardsmen as they reached the top of Blanket Hill on the campus of Kent State University, turned in unison, and fired 67 times at unarmed student demonstrators below the hill.

These are the words that shed new light on the history of that horrific day and gave new meaning to the search for the historic truth about the events of that day.

“Guard”… “All right, prepare to fire!”… “Get down!”… and finally “Guard!”…is followed by the fusillade of lethal bullets. It took seventeen seconds for those words to change history forever.

Alan Canfora, one of the students wounded as a result of the Guard’s gunfire, located the tape in 2007 in a Yale University archive and called the two audio experts’ findings a “major development.”

Barry Levine, a Kent State student whose girlfriend, Allison Krause, was killed in the volley of gunfire, said, when informed of the tape’s new analysis, “How do you spell bombshell?”

I interviewed Stuart Allen on two occasions while working with an issue related to the new analysis of the tape with fellow writer and author of Four Dead In Ohio (1995), William A. Gordon.

I was taken at how unassuming Stuart Allen was as we talked about the contents of the new analysis of the Strubbe tape. Stuart wanted only to make a contribution based on his scientific expertise so that history would record the exact words uttered on that fateful day in May 1970 in Ohio. He donated a significant amount of time to the analysis of the tape and its presentation. He donated his expertise to educate those interested in what history actually will ultimately record about that day that took place over 46 years ago. Stuart emphasized how important he felt about getting that history right.

In Albert Camus’ novel, The Plague (1947), a character in a scene that can only be described as existential, struggles to get a simple description correct as a writer, and after torturous revisions of his narrative, and when he is satisfied with his simple offering, exclaims, “Hats off, gentlemen [sic]!” thinking of how his writing will be greeted.

There was nothing affected about Stuart Allen as there was with Camus’ struggling character, but the revelation of “Hats off, gentlemen and gentle persons!” is perhaps one of the best ways to honor Stuart Allen and his work!

ON LINE COMMENT OF THE DAY

Just face facts. The US government works the way it was intended to work, for the people it was intended to work for. You are not among those people. You are just another amber shaft of grain in their vast plantation. Your life, measured in rent checks, mortgage payments, health insurance premiums, student loan remittances and credit card payments, is their harvest. You are just livestock to them, and the planet is your overgrazed pasture. Your job is to devour the world and turn it into their money. That’s why we have a government, and that’s why we have the government we have. (John Hardin)

HUMCO TRUMP DIALOGUE FROM LOST COAST OUTPOST

Mail Order Melania Writes:

Awww look at the dumbmass Trump supporter, another right wing shit bag who voted their values. They support a liar, fraud, deeply stupid and unthinking man who has never had to work a day in his life and who ran a campaign of vile racism and sexism based on white resentment.

Then, this fuckbag has the gall to criticize the most effective leader this nation has seen since Eisenhower all the while typing out utter bullshit about poll numbers and the media. You're a fucking nasty, shitty person who is being held responsible for your actions in supporting Trump and that mail-order porn star who stuck a turkey baster into her cooch so she would get paid.

Be proud, own your ignorance, your spite and your outright duumbassery and then get the fuck out of the country. You're not welcome here you fucking traitor, you or that orange-colored shitgibbon who is bought and paid for by a hostile nation.

The fucking clown car has turned into a clown train and all you can do is whine when the rest of the world points you out as the foul, willlfully ignorant cockwhistle you are.

Own it, ya bitch.

Awww.. and yet another butthurt liberal crybaby that can't get over the fact that Hilary lost. For a party that was so much against hate and anger, you've redefined hate and anger in your post.
Trump will move on with his Presidency, and probably so for two terms. The best part is that Trump will continue to live inside your head, rent free. The internet has got to be one of man's best innovations ever, and yet it is mostly used for porn and arguing.

At present, AVHC has two medical providers: Dr. Apfel and Nurse Practitioner (NP) Cindy Arbanovella. Dr. McGhan’s caseload must be split between them, and since Cindy speaks Spanish, that split isn’t going to be even. Thus, it’s not accurate to state that Dr. Apfel’s patient load will double. (Moreover, since Dr. Apfel’s patient load appears to be infinite, it’s meaningless to multiply it by anything finite.)

Nevertheless, the fundamental point – that this is a big step backwards for AVHC – is sound.

Shock & Awe at Schat’s Bakery this a.m. when I came in for coffee it was 32 degrees F. outside and some of the street people I know (Alan in one corner, Billy in another) were nursing cups of coffee, killing time in the warmth, having spent the night on the streets.

I went up to order and a new waitress floored me by gushing about how much she liked my clothes, a tweed sports coat, twill slacks and a tartan necktie, my tastes being rather urbane, if not entirely conservative.

“That’s so rad!” she exclaimed breathlessly. “I just love it!”

“Thank you,” I murmered, flattered but at the same time somewhat confused, having thought “rad” was an abbreviation of “radical.”

But, come to think on it, I guess in Mendocino County where people dress in the most outrageous costumes imaginable, a button-down shirt with a tie and jacket can be refreshingly shocking — radically out of the ordinary — or so it seemed for this tasteful young lady.

Calpella is a few miles north, on the former mostly black walnut tree lined roadway, which was widened at times, here and there.

Bruce: It not only is true in Mendo County also pretty true of Sacramento. A number of years ago when I worked in the financial district In S F the uniform of the day was three piece suits with white shirt, tie and wing toe shoes. Then I was transferred to Sacramento where the dress code was combat boots, khaki pants ans sport shirt. Once you leave the big city and go to hicksville there is a drastic change in how people dress.
